Grew up in a 'moderate' Muslim family in a small wealthy country in the Gulf. Came across terrorist sympathisers, misogynists, and extreme homophobia. At first, I began to dislike everyone and started blaming everything on society itself. Then the truth dawned on me that people do not actually suck all that much and it's the ideology they hold dear that is robbing them of their empathy and compassion. And then evolution came. And then I started thinking about the idea of eternal hellfire for non-Muslims. I also like Hollywood movies and American TV shows, and maybe they were right about me being completely brainwashed by them. But I would gladly accept this brainwashing that had made me reject this morally bankrupt ideology that is flawed beyond repair. If I'd become more caring and rational, and less judgmental because of it, then I'd happily and proudly be this brainwashed lemming.
