Since 22 year old Imad Iddine Habib founded the Council of Ex-Muslims of Morocco (the first public atheist organisation in a country with Islam as the state religion), he has received numerous threats.
Morocco’s High Council of Ulemas (the highest government religious institution headed by the King) issued a fatwa decreeing the death penalty for Moroccans who leave Islam. Currently, under Morocco’s penal code, those who “impede or prevent worship” face imprisonment and fines.
The threats continue to escalate. Recently, Imad’s father has been interrogated by the secret service. He was told to tell Imad to stop his activities and that this would be the “last warning before they react”. Imad’s registered address has also been raided by security forces.
We, the undersigned, are extremely concerned about Imad’s safety and life and call on the Moroccan government to guarantee his security and respect freedom of expression and thought. Rather than prosecute freethinkers, the government should prosecute those who issue fatwas and death threats.
On 15 May we call for an International Imad Day in order to stand with and defend Imad.
He is all of us.
[For 15 May, add your name to the list below; send letters of protest to the Moroccan embassy in your country of residence; Tweet #Imad, #Atheist, #exMuslim; do an act of solidarity, including posting a photo of yourself holding a message like Imad has done (you can also email the photo to exmuslimcouncil@gmail.com); click “like” on the Council of Ex-Muslims of Morocco’s Facebook page and more.]

I have the fondest memories of my stay in Morocco.
The Moroccans I have met are amongst the warmest, friendliest and most tolerant people in the World. I cannot believe they would condone or countenance this ugly, vindicitve intolerance against Imad Iddine Habib, whose only crime is to pose questions and honestly and courageously state his beliefs.
Friends, think again, atheism and secularism are not a threat to you or your way of life, quite the contrary.
Australia.
Brandon Anderson, USA, TX. I stand with Imad for free thought and expression. Oppression only degrades, never builds and will be the end of us all if we don’t put away outmoded thinking.

Do not silence Imad – let Morrocco be the country in Northern part of Africa to show support to free speech – Imad you are not alone. We will be here and support you and your right to freedom of speech and to be atheist.
Let Imad be free from extremist’s violence.
If your religion is so fragile you must compel people to maintain it through force, then you have bigger problems on your hands than Imad. Stop acting like petulant children and start acting like leaders. By the way— calling a threat a “fatwa” doesn’t make it any less abhorrent. Your silly pursuit against this young man brings heavy shame on what I am continually told is a “religion of peace.”
Please add my name to the list — freedom to believe or disbelieve is a human right.

We all know how bad religion can be. Now it is time to give up on the other fairy tale that infects the minds of many atheists, the cult of the state. Imad’s case goes to show the state is primarily an instrument of oppression that needs to be opposed as stringly as faith is. In a stateless society Imad would be free to express his views.

ISLAM cannot be very convincing if theocratic state institutions have to threaten death to those who do not follow their dogma.
It is astonishing that anyone can possibly think that threatening death is virtuous, and that expressing your true thoughts and feelings is evil.
Some of humanity is still trapped in the dark ages!
Let there be freedom of thoughts.

This is NOT something that can be imposed by a Monarch or any other individual who has an Army. Nor is it something that can be imposed by one group of humans on others just because they have read something that was said by someone, and written down by others at a later date.
NO, just tell these people that GOD is quite capable of sorting us out himself – he does NOT need them to fight his battles.
The Moroccans and others of their ilk must get into the world of TODAY, and leave that young man alone.

Atheism is no crime!
Ideas should be expressed freely.
Religion makes the world a sad place. Imad is not “impeding or preventing” worship, anyway. He is simply speaking up for his own (and others) right to speak up to be without one. These religious people need a swift punishment as a wake-up call to realize THEY are the ones attacking us and THEY are the ones holding back humanity – but no matter what, I have hope humanity will prevail and progress completely past these sorry, untruthful excuses for the origins of our beautiful Universe.
Well spoken Sarah.

Behead fallacious appeals to force.
Freedom, of religion must include the right not to have one.
Why does Islam feel so threatened by the opinion of one brave man?
A strong faith does not need to persecute those who choose not to believe. The Morroccan Govts threats are not faith-based – the regime simply views Islam as a convenient vehicle to crush dissent and reinforce it’s hold on power.
Freedom of religion must include the right not to have one

D’you know, it’s easier to prove that God does exist than to prove that He doesn’t. But atheists – blessed be their unconscious search for Him- will shout out more than those who are believers. Perhaps the latter know something…….

“If I were to speak your kind of language, I would say that man’s only moral commandment is: Thou shalt think. But a ‘moral commandment’ is a contradiction in terms. Morocco has so far escaped the ‘Arab Spring’ debacle and avoided a takeover by Islamists. But if the ‘ulama’ get their way in this matter, it will strengthen the hand of the religious right, and that will produce repercussions down the line.
Any man made religion based on ancient and stone age lies that contradict with Human rights declaration muss be band an and the followers of such inhuman ideas must be brought to the court and justice.
I support anyone, anywhere who opposes religion and religious based ignorance.

I agree with the suggestion above that Morocco’s reliance on tourism provides the best point at which we can pressure its rulers. How about a list of those committed not to holiday in Morocco until the law against apostasy is repealed?
Freethought and free speech for everybody!

Full support for Imad for his courageous stand against religious thuggery.
I hope Imad stays safe and well. My thoughts are with him and others in the world who are persecuted because of their views.
Freedom of belief, thought, conscience, and expression are basic human rights. To deny these is unacceptable.

With the help of the internet, Religion and its clergy will hopefully soon be a nightmare of the past. Especially the dogmatic Religions like Islam as well as Katolicism Need to be fought by everyone with half a brain. It is hard to beleive that we live in the 21st century. Wake up people, there is no God to look after us, it’s all a big scam!
Freedom of religion, philosophy, thought – it’s paramount to personal and social development.

Unfortunately, what we are up against is flourishing throughout the world and must be resisted by every means possible by all who find suppression of free speech utterly intolerable….but of course saying that is only logical, although we could be forgiven for thinking it’s not!
We must never allow any religion to dictate to governments on personal freedom
I am an atheist and although my parents were too, they sent me to religion school as a child so I would know the religion I was born into and be able to choose whether to follow it or not. That allowed me to make a decision from a position of informed freedom. Only in freedom can people choose the direction of their beliefs. To enforce a belief is to divert the truth. Those who stand up for freedom and choice are following the path of truth and their country should be proud of them. It is courageous and honest and to be protected. Good Luck to Imad, a leader of youth and inspirer of many who are believers in truth!
I loved the Moroccan countryside, the cities, and above all the people when I visited there some years ago. And so I have a specially passionate reason now for signing this statement in solidarity with young Imad Iddine Habib. Living in the UK it’s very hard for me to understand why a person who can no longer believe some doctrine should deserve a punishment, let alone one as severe as a fatwa decreeing the death penalty. I realise of course how important Islam is to most Moroccan people, but freedom of religion, freedom to believe or not to believe are vital for a truly safe society. Imad Iddine Habib’s personal safety must be guaranteed and his manifest integrity respected. An all-powerful all-knowing god should have nothing to fear from this young man and his colleagues. If the god (whoever it be, in whatever land) is cross about it, why not leave the matter to him (or her, or it)?

Without freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and the right to criticise the beliefs of others, all other freedoms are meaningless.

I am a Norwegian atheist, secular humanist and human rights activist. Imad has my full support. Shame on Morocco for allowing religious fundamentalists to thrive in their society, spreading hate towards free thinkers and threatening their very existence with violence and murder.
Atheism is the only path to true spirituality.
I myself, alone, with no imaginary friends, support Mr Imad courageous initiative.
It must be a weak government who reacts with violence to words. It must be a weak religion who utters threats when it cannot convince. It must be a weak god who needs a secret service.

As an Atheist, realist, humanist I support Imad and his principled stand for freedom of speech and his choice not to worship any imagined god. In this century we are celebrating the dawning of a new, post religious age: it is the only way for Humanity to solve the problems of over-population and diminishing resources.
Without the divisive forces of stultifying religious dogma we can begin to work together for the benefit of all.
Science is the only process known to open the collective mind of Humankind to new horizons and to abolish the ignorance of Belief.
Please add my name. I believe that everybody has the right to freedom of worship or not to worship any god if that is their choice.

Hello
I believe strongly in tolerance and I stand up with Imad for his right to think and live according to his own ideas with self responsibility.
Its a difficult question isn’t it- ” How to tolerate the intolerable”?
I am not an atheist. I acknowledge a spiritual dimension to life. I have learnt through experience and study, about my own prejudice: in particular from Buddhist thinking about suffering arising from a misconception of reality because we ‘attach’ so much importance to concepts.
Like others I am concerned about the power organised Religion gives people especially governments. Religion should be a personal matter.
Philosophy and belief informs our lives and helps us to live well and creatively. Ideas are not to control us or for us to attempt to control others but to help us understand and grow.
With love and compassion

Well said! It is not quite the Stone Age we risk reverting to, but the Dark Ages, to which we will all return if we allow the growth of pernicious ideas. The one thing we cannot afford to tolerate is intolerance!

Morocco is not in the Stone Age – it shows us the way of our future as we continue our political correctness (in the name of tolerance and multiculturalism) and allow Islam to increase its foot-hold until it is strong enough to impose Sharia Law.
